Trash Era 1

Background

Trash is the 18th 'Alice Cooper' studio album and was released in 1989. Following his successful return to the music business, Alice wanted to crown his comeback with a hit album. To do so, he signed with the Sony-owned powerhouse music label Epic Records and enlisted the help of renowned songwriter and producer Desmond Child. Child had a proven track record of creating chart-topping songs, with his CV including working with the likes of Aerosmith, Bon Jovi, Joan Jett & The Blackhearts and Kiss.

Trash is an unapologetic radio-friendly ten-track album, designed to appeal to the widest possible audience. For this reason, it lacks some of the unique character of traditional Alice Cooper albums. This is probably best evidenced by the track House Of Fire, which started life as demo by Bon Jovi and could easily have appeared on one of their albums! There is just enough of an Alice signature to set it apart though, with his distinctive, raspy, voice present throughout and enough detail in the lyrics and song titles to gently remind listeners of his previous pedigree.

Trash also features several guest artists, with Joe Perry (Aerosmith), Steven Tyler (also Aerosmith) and Jon Bon Jovi amongst those making appearances, albeit fairly low-key ones.

The album opener Poison should need no introduction, a worldwide hit and an ever-present in his live shows, it oozes sophistication and is almost certainly the classiest track ever recorded by Alice. The guitar riff for Poison is inspired by the track Encircled by John Waite.

Spark In The Dark and House Of Fire have a tough act to follow, but both are incredibly catchy, toe-tapping, rockers in their own right that keep the listener firmly engaged.

The angsty Why Trust You and acoustic-driven ballad Only My Heart Talkin' are, in truth, non-essential components of Trash that are quickly erased from the mind by the furious, bluntly-lyriced, Bed Of Nails (which features a guest appearance by Constrictor and Raise Your Fist And Yell musician Kane Roberts).

The closest we come to hearing Alice's traditional sense of humour can be heard in the quirky This Maniac's In Love With You, whereas Trash and the album closer I'm Your Gun are rather crass, unintelligent, offerings. Sandwiched between them is the atmospheric ballad Hell Is Living Without You, another classy offering with a full-blown production.

Trash had big ambitions and realised many of them. This came at a cost though, with Alice having to tone down his image (to the dismay of many fans). Whilst it may not be considered by many as his most influential work, there is no doubting its importance to his career, the impact of which continues to be benefited from to this very day.

Trash 12" Promotional Vinyl Album

1989, Epic, E45137

This USA 12" promotional version of Trash, the first Alice Cooper release under the Epic label, comes in a simple card sleeve and features an image of Alice dressed in leather and custom Alice T-shirt, with his head bowed to the ground. On the rear of the sleeve are track listings and confirmation that the album is produced by Desmond Child. Also provided on the rear cover is a gold 'FOR PROMOTION ONLY...' stamp.

The disc features blue Epic labels, which are identical to USA stock copies (i.e. the gold stamp on the rear is the only way to differentiate promotional copies from stock copies). The black and white inner sleeve features track listings, lyrics and credits.

Trash 12" Vinyl Album

1989, Epic, 70-098

This Argentine 1st pressing of Basura (i.e. Trash) comes in a simple card sleeve and features white Epic labels with bilingual Spanish / English track listings. In addition to the use of Spanish text, this release is unique as the front cover features a red background and a cropped version of the artwork seen on other versions of the album. Furthermore, the rear of the sleeve includes an extra image of Alice, as seen in the CD version booklet and on the front of the Poison single (below), only in black-and-white, alongside further bilingual track listings and credits.

A further notable aspect of this release is that the track order is different to the usual arrangement, with Spark In The Dark and Trash moved from tracks two and eight to seven and three respectively.

This further rare Czechoslovakian vinyl version of Trash by Globus International is exactly same as the above version only this one features a stunning, not to mention unique, yellow splatter effect vinyl disc.

This was well ahead of its time, with elaborate coloured vinyl like this not becoming big in Alice Cooper circles for some 25 years-or-so later.

2017, Music On Vinyl, MOVLP1862

This European 180 gram re-issue of Trash by Music On Vinyl is limited to 1,500 individually stamped copies (of which this is #0393), comes in a simple card sleeve and has a paper insert featuring track listings, lyrics and credits. The vinyl is a nice translucent red colour, making it very similar to the 2013 Friday Music re-issue (above).

It appears as though fans who purchased this edition received slightly different hype stickers on the front, with some in gold stating the production run figure of 1,500 and others in black (like mine) not. Apparently, the reason is that a further run of black vinyls was produced and some of the hype stickers for those editions made it onto the limited red versions.

This time limited to 2,500 individually stamped copies (of which this is #0222), it is almost exactly the same as the above release only that is features a different hype sticker on the front, a nice opaque silver and black marbled disc and slightly reconfigured artwork on the rear of the sleeve. The two versions can also be distinguished by their different barcodes.

Trash CD Album

2014, Cherry Red Records, HNECD031

Released in January 2014, this European CD re-issue of Trash is similar to the offering by Cherry Red Records a few months earlier for Hey Stoopid. This album again comes in 'Digipak' sleeve, which unfolds to reveal both the CD and artwork from the Trash era. There's also another excellent booklet (with more historical imagery) presented by journalist Malcolm Dome, which gives a good insight into the album.

There are two bonus tracks included. Firstly, there's a radio edit of Only My Heart Talkin' which is merely a shorter version of that from the album and, therefore, of no major excitement. The second track, I Got a Line On You (a Spirit cover that featured on the motion picture Iron Eagle II and was recorded again in 2015 as part of Alice's Hollywood Vampires project), is a more worthy addition as it previously was only freely available on a few of the Trash era singles (see below) and The Life And Crimes Of Alice Cooper Box Set. It's a pretty good song so it's good to see it included on the album that's chronologically closest to it.

As with the Hey Stoopid release, it's a shame that more exciting content (demos) couldn't be dug up, but I understand why this may not be possible. It's still worth snapping up though as it's better than the original release.

Trash CD Album

2014, Cherry Red Records, HNECD031

This interesting 'state-of-the-art' Japanese 'Blu-Spec' CD release of Trash features the same track listings as the 2014 Cherry Red Records version (above) but in a traditional jewel case and a far less interesting black and white booklet. An 'Obi Strip' is also provided (a common feature on Japanese music releases).

Blue-Spec CDs promise reduced distortion due to the use of a blue laser to create more precise pits (e.g. manufactured in similar way to Blu-Rays). I can't personally hear much difference between this and a standard recording, however, someone using more expensive kit may be able to. And before you ask, no, the CD is not blue, it's the same as a normal disc.

The booklet is very disappointing with four pages of Japanese on Alice's history followed by both English and Japanese lyrics. There are no pictures at all other than that shown above on the back of the booklet.

A similar re-issue of Hey Stoopid was also released at the same time.

Video Trash VHS Video

1990, CMV Enterprises, 49033-2

The popularity of the Trash album was such that it saw the release of Video Trash, a 15-minute home video containing the official music videos for Poison, House Of Fire and Bed Of Nails (for some reason Only My Heart Talkin' was excluded). Also provided were some short interludes specially filmed for the release during the Trashes The World tour in the UK. Sadly, my VHS player no longer works so I can't describe them in any detail.

With the videos freely available on the internet these days, this is an unessential release for all but the most diehard of fans.

Video Trash 8" LaserDisc

1990, CMV Enterprises, ID7292CB

LaserDiscs were the first home-based optical media format and were introduced way back in the late 1970's. As you will appreciate from the images below, they were typically 12" in diameter meaning that they looked like a DVD but were actually the size of a typical vinyl album. Unlike DVDs they were also double-sided, but with only about 60 minutes of storage time on each side, viewers typically had to change sides at least once per movie (Terminator 2, for example, came on two discs and required three changes from start to finish).

Although revolutionary at the time, and despite surviving for about 20 years, they failed to topple the monopoly of the VHS videotape due to the very high purchase costs of the players and discs (a good player could cost more than double that of an equivalent VHS player) and the fact that you couldn't record your own media on them. That said, the high image and audio quality meant they enjoyed (and in some cases, still do enjoy) a cult following amongst videophiles in regions like North America and Japan. The advent of the DVD around the turn of the 21st century acted as the final nail in the coffin for LaserDiscs.

Several Alice Cooper LaserDisc releases were made, including Prime Cuts, Trashes The World, the Welcome To My Nightmare live show and this USA 8" version of Video Trash, which features similar artwork to the original VHS release (above). Due to the short content on offer, Side 2 is unused.

This UK 7" vinyl single is exactly the same as the above version but, randomly, features an additional 'Alive' logo on the rear of the sleeve and includes track lengths on the vinyl labels. Why this is the case is a mystery, but I can only assume it's because the above version was discovered to have these omissions and were subsequently corrected. Even stranger though, is that there is apparently another variant that doesn't include the Alive logo and has a track length on only one of the labels!

Poison CD Single

1989, Epic, 6551652

This novel UK CD release of Poison features flat-pack cardboard which, with enough skill and patience, can be transformed into a large poison bottle. The intricate design features a slot in the side with which the CD can be safely housed.

The CD features the same four tracks as the above standard CD single and the CD itself actually has the same code number (i.e. 6550612).

These are quite hard to come across these days, especially in good / complete condition as they are fragile and easily damaged.

I have two copies as follows:

1. Constructed version in ok condition but is slightly misshapen at the top and is also missing the pointed crown of the bottle top. I've superglued it together to help maintain its structural integrity.

2. Flat-packed / sealed copy in fine condition (the packaging has broken open at the top though).

All-in-all, this is a pretty cool item but quite difficult to store when made!

House Of Fire 12" Vinyl Single Test Pressing

1989, Epic, ALICE P4

House Of Fire is probably the Alice Cooper single with the most variants, with no fewer than nine different vinyl versions in the UK alone (the first eight of these are shown above). The ninth and final version is the most striking though as it features a 12" picture disc of a snarling Alice, which was cut around the outline of his head to form a unique, jagged, design.

The mainstream version is featured below but I'm also pleased to own this uncut test pressing. According to eil.com this would have been used to test image alignment and print quality before the final run was cut to the desired shape. It therefore seems likely that only a handful of these were produced.

Despite the size of the disc only an approximate 7" size area features playable music, so just 1 track is provided on each side. The tracks provided are House Of Fire on Side A and This Maniac's In Love With You on Side B (both from the Trash album).
